Mitchell Cohen (Leader)

Trial Lawyer , Perren Buildings

Solicitor-Advocate ,

** Mitchell was shortlisted as Solicitor Advocate of the Year in the 2014 Law Society Excellence Awards **

Since being admitted in 1986, Mitch has defended all sorts of cases ranging from Serious Fraud Office frauds, Security and Investments Board investigations, and murder to traffic matters. His business law degree gives him a deeper understanding of tax and accountancy than might otherwise be expected. His long membership and association with the British Academy of Forensic Science gives him access to the latest forensic techniques as well as access to the foremost experts in their field and he was awarded a Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Criminal Law in 1997.

Awarded Higher Rights in 2003, he has regularly appeared as an advocate in jury trials and since 2007 has practiced almost exclusively as a Crown Court advocate although he has practiced in both Crown and Magistrates Courts throughout his career. He conducts trials both as a junior and alone in all categories of work but most often in serious sexual offences, cases which involve consideration of forensic evidence and cases in which the defendant, complainant or witnesses are vulnerable by reason of age, mental capacity or ability.

He has also been solicitor to a number of branches of the National Market Traders Federation. He has a niche practice advising and representing street traders threatened with revocation of or refusal to grant or renew street trading licences. He served as a District Councillor for 6 years and became a cabinet member holding the Legal and Property portfolio. He was chairman of the Licensing Committee and regularly adjudicated on licensing applications and applications for review for all sorts of licences from liquor and entertainment to taxi drivers and sex shops. He now regularly represents licence holders including taxi and private hire drivers or firms before Licensing Committees and Courts.

He has been a Legal Services Commission Independent Peer Reviewer, in the crime category, since 2006, charged with overseeing, judging and grading the quality of advice, client care and service provided to Legally Aided clients by law firms acting in criminal matters across England a Wales.

A client once referred to Mitchell as “…an oasis of hope in a desert of despair…”. He has a passion for vigorous, tenacious but professional advocacy, coupled with down to earth  practical advice and uncompromising client care.
